City of Commerce City Specialty Fitness Instructor I II III IV in Commerce City, Colorado

General Purpose

Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, Recreation Assistant, or the Recreation Supervisor, Specialty Fitness Instructors will lead safe, effective and enjoyable specialty group fitness classes for the community. Must provide in-depth instruction on proper form and technique, follow appropriate class format guidelines and modify class to meet a variety of fitness levels. Specialty Fitness Instructors are responsible for supervising participants, creating a supportive exercise environment and continued development of skills and knowledge. Must be able to work successfully in a team-oriented atmosphere, including being available to substitute classes and be an advocate for all Parks and Recreation programs and services.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the ability to instruct and prepare safe, effective and enjoyable fitness classes that meet industry standards and match class descriptions.

  • Creates a supportive environment and ensures every participant has a positive and successful exercise experience.

  • Exhibits an understanding and knowledge of exercise science, nutrition and wellness to promote fitness and educate participants about a lifetime approach.

  • Supervises class participants during fitness classes and is prepared to enforce recreation center policies and respond to any emergencies.

  • Provides personalized attention and customer service to group fitness participants and recreation center customers.

  • Communicates and responds to messages from the recreation center staff. Attends orientations, meetings, workshops and other instructors' classes, as necessary.

  • Supports the fitness staff team by subbing and being available to assist in various capacities.

  • Obtains and updates necessary certifications.

  • Complies with City and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age. Previous experience a plus, but not required. Spanish/English bilingual preferred but not required. Must hold current CPR and AED certifications or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Ability to demonstrate competent technical instructor skills.

Specialty Fitness Instructor I:

All of the above plus:

  • National primary group exercise certification-AFAA or ACE preferred, but others accepted as deemed appropriate

  • Completed <70 hours of training/certification from reputable organization (as deemed appropriate by Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness) for specialty certification such as ZumbaTM, Spinningā„¢, N'BalanceĀ®, or Yoga

Specialty Fitness Instructor II:

All of the above plus:

  • Completed 70- <200 hours of training/certification from reputable organization (as deemed appropriate by Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness) for specialty certifications such as Yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi

  • Less than 1 year teaching experience

Specialty Fitness Instructor III:

All of the above plus:

  • Completed 200+ hours of training/certification from reputable organization (as deemed appropriate by Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness) for specialty certifications such as Yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi

  • 1-5 years teaching experience

Specialty Fitness Instructor IV:

All of the above plus:

  • Completed 200+ hours of training/certification from reputable organization (as deemed appropriate by Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness) for specialty certifications such as Yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi

  • Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science or related field AND/OR 5+ years teaching experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have high knowledge of exercise science, nutrition and wellness

  • Must be able to exhibit excellent technical skills to instruct group fitness classes

  • Must be highly motivated and take direction well

  • Must be able to use independent judgment while applying general organizational policies and values

  • Must be able to adapt to varied customer service, equipment and work environment situations

  • Must be willing to work a varied work schedule which may include evenings, weekends and holidays

  • Must have no physical limitations regarding the lifting of items up to 25 pounds to assist participants with gathering appropriate equipment for class participation

  • Office equipment: Regular use of technical sound system and wireless microphone

  • Computer equipment: Occasional

  • Language skills: Regular communication in a variety of ways including in person, phone and email

  • Physical activities: Regular physical activity to effectively lead and demonstrate appropriate class exercises and activities

  • Vision and Hearing: Must be able to read and give verbal instructions and respond to spoken communications

  • Lifting: Regular lifting of up to 25 pounds

  • Exposure to environmental conditions: None

Salary: $18.69 - $30.26 Hourly
