Summary

Functions as a food service worker and/or as a cook at the WG 4 level.

DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.205) for this occupation.

Responsibilities

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until 02/08/2020. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be September 21st ,2020 with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled Prints daily required diet reports and inpatient and outpatient tray tickets for meals: adjusts tickets as needed. Accommodates early and late tray requests. Communicates special menu items for food production and service. Addresses additional orders and likes, dislikes and allergies either through the computer or manually. Interacts with patients to obtain/clarify food preferences and/or menu items. Ensures communication that meets the patient's physical abilities. Assembles tray tickets for tray line, ensuring accuracy and clarity while following outlined procedures for special situations. Handles any telephone requests concerning patient meals, tube feeding orders and nourishments with courtesy and respect. Provides census for the tray line at each meal. Works all positions on the tray line and service to veteran's bedside or dining table. Apportions food for tray line or nourishments using designated portions and containers. Makes final check on patient trays assembled by lower grade workers for completeness, accuracy and safe food temperatures. Safely transports trays and/or nourishments to wards. Delivers meal trays and nourishments to patient's bedside, using proper identification and sanitation. Retrieves meal trays from patient's bedside and/or dirty tray cart using proper sanitation and courtesy. Delivers bulk and individual nourishments and tube feeding formulas to wards and clinics. Performs cleaning tasks in work areas including dish room, scullery, and all cleaning tasks as assigned. Assists with on-the-job training of lower grade employees. Addresses any patient comments or complaints in a courteous manner, referring any unresolved concerns to their supervisor. On a regular recurring basis may perform a full range of cooking: under the supervision of the food services supervisor or cook. Performs full range of cooking by preparing any items including hot cereal, soups, and gravies from a mix. Prepares all items including multiple preparations of uncooked meats and scratch desserts. Prepares pureed diet foods. Prepares food by peeling, chopping, grinding, pairing, cutting, slicing, or dicing. Mixes ingredients according to standardized recipes that produce quality and safe products. Weighs, measures and assembles ingredients for healthy and modified diet items. Covers, dates, and stores leftover food according to established procedures. Ensures food items are stored at correct temperatures to prevent bacteria growth. Follows established sanitation procedures when handling food. Operates a variety of kitchen equipment. Disassembles and assembles component parts of equipment for cleaning. Uses and cleans a variety of cooking utensils required in food preparation. Work Schedule: Part-time / 20 hours a week ROTATING SHIFTS & DAYS OFF

Physical Requirement

The work involves heavy physical effort in frequently lifting or moving items up to 40 pounds such as lifting bags of potatoes, containers of milk, etc., pushing heavy carts of silverware and glassware, or moving trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. When required to lift or move heavier items, assistance is available. The work may also involve scouring and/or scrubbing large-sized kitchen utensils, or operating powered cleaning equipment on ladders._ Work requires prolonged periods of standing and walking along with frequent bending, stooping, pulling and pushing. Working Conditions

The work is performed in a kitchen area which frequently is hot and humid due to cooking and dishwashing activities. The work area is well lighted but noisy from food service activities. While working in cooking areas, incumbent is subject to the possibility of slipping on wet floors, skin irritations from harsh-dishwashing liquids, burns, cuts, bruises, and eye injury. Incumbent is also subject to varied temperature extremes while inside walk-in refrigerator or freezer units. Incumbent must wear protective clothes, shoes, gloves, earplugs, and/or other safety and hygiene equipment as required by food handling and safety standards when performing assigned tasks.
